QUESTIONING JEWISH IDENTITY: THE MANY VOICES OF NINETEENTH CENTURY GERMAN JEWS with Rabbi Lee

The first time that Jews had the freedom to decide whether or not to be Jewish came at the beginning of the ninteenth century with the possibility of political emancipation. The widest range of responses to the question of how to be Jewish came from the Jews of Germany. In this seminar, Rabbi Lee will offer the voices of religious reformers, of unabashed assimilationist, and of self-hating Salon Jewesses among others. The seminar will provide a lens through which participants can examine their own Jewish selves. In addition, the seminar will serve as a good introduction to those who will be traveling to Berlin in May.
