The Unsung Heroes: Appreciation for Our First Responders

“We tend to take for granted those things in life that we rely upon but don’t often see.
We don’t see through the same eyes of those who serve or dedicate their lives to keep us safe.
We don’t know the same fears or pains.
We live our lives in a detached awareness, a vague oblivion, knowing they are there, somewhere, doing something…” K. Roberts

In every community, there is a group of individuals who face danger and uncertainty with unwavering courage and commitment, even at great personal sacrifice. These individuals are our first responders: paramedics, firefighters, police officers, security guards, and other front-line workers. Their work is often difficult, dangerous, and emotionally taxing. Yet, they serve professionally and selflessly and deserve our deep appreciation.

First responders embody qualities beyond technical expertise. They reflect the very essence of service, resilience, and dedication. Their commitment to their profession, even in the face of immense danger or personal discomfort, cannot be overstated.

On December 18th, our co-presidents, members of the Board of Trustees, clergy, and staff hosted our Second Annual First Responders Appreciation Dinner for members of the 6th precinct, the Plandome Fire Department, congregants’ volunteer firemen, officers from The Port Washington Police Department, and our security guards. It was wonderful to show our appreciation for the sense of safety, security, and the immense value they bring to our lives and communities.

Just this past week, the PWPD hosted a luncheon to engage in community-building which was attended by the Port Clergy Association

Today, may we take nothing for granted. The next time you see a first responder, remember their dedication that keeps us safe. Their sacrifices deserve our deepest gratitude.

Happy Holidays to all!
